When she was in school, Mary Griffith experienced difficulty understanding most subjects. The only thing that made sense to her was books. She understood library science and loved to read. As a result, she worked in the library during high school, assisting students find what they were looking for; she enjoyed doing it.

Wanting to establish a career in the industry, Ms. Griffith studied library science along with drama and speech in college. She went on to receive a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas, as well as a principal certificate from the State Department of Education.

Breaking into the industry, she started her career as a substitute teacher simultaneously working for two school districts. She earned her first full-time teaching job with Fordyce Elementary School and worked there for three years before moving to Bearden High School. Working at the high school for 25 years, she was responsible for teaching library classes, ensuring that the library was stocked with the latest books, and assisting teachers with problems and concerns. Recognized for her dedication and passion for the industry, Ms. Griffith was awarded the Charles Scribner’s Sons Award.

While she loved teaching library classes, Ms. Griffith made the decision to explore the administration side of the industry. In her role, she was responsible for writing federal grant proposals and actively participating on the committee that evaluated the school. She also had to attend conferences and workshops around the country.

She attributes her success to the support of her family. Ms. Griffith is an affiliate of the Retired Teachers Association and the National Education Association.

Away from work, Ms. Griffith volunteers at her local church, and enjoys taking photographs and videos of weddings, funerals and birthday parties.
